Fatty acid metabolism is abnormal in insulin-resistant states that increase the risk of
atherosclerosis such as type 2 diabetes and the metabolic syndrome. How fatty acids
promote vascular disease is poorly understood, but lipoprotein lipase and peroxisome
proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα)—physiologically related proteins involved in fatty
