Immunological self-tolerance can be acquired by several mechanisms, including the
induction of anergy in autoreactive T cells. In this sense, anergy is predictably advantageous
for the immune system. Here, Konstantin Salojin and colleagues present an alternative view
that the induction of anergy in regulatory T cells may be harmful to the host and elicit
autoimmune disease.
